In July we announced that FUTO Circles would be transitioned to a community open source project. Unfortunately we also stated that the FUTO servers will be shutdown by the end of 2024.
You are receiving this message because you have a Circles account registered on one of the above affected servers. Please note that you will not be able to login with your account after December 31st, 2024.
The Android/iOS Circles apps will still exist on the app store, but in order to continue using the apps you must using an existing or create a new account on a compatible Matrix server.
If you would like to export your post history before the servers are shut down, you can do so with following steps:
Login to your Circles account from your mobile device, also acknowledging the shutdown notice if present during login.
After login, wait a minute or so to let the app download the latest posts.
Visit any of the below sites corresponding to your account registration and login (for example, if your account is '@example:circles.futo.org
', you should visit element.circles.futo.org). This site is a modified version of the Matrix Element web client that is compatible with Circles accounts.
You may ignore the 'Verify this device
' prompt on login by closing the dialog and selecting 'I'll verify later
'. Device verification is not required and you will still be able to access your encrypted messages and export your data.
You are now able to browse each of your groups and circles in the Element web application. You also may need to wait a minute or so to let posts download and decrypt on first login. Click on the 'Circles
' space (you can expand the left sidebar if needed) to see a list of all rooms created by the Circles app.
To export your post history for a specific room, click on the room you wish to export to see the message timeline. Click on the room header (top bar with room thumbnail and name) and it should bring up the right sidebar showing a list of options. Select the 'Info
' tab if not already selected. Then click on 'Export Chat
' to open the dialog. The default options of using 'HTML
' format and 'Current Timeline
' for messages should be fine unless you wish to change them. Be sure to check 'Include Attachments
' and input a large enough 'Size Limit
' if you have uploaded photos/videos that you wish to preserve. The click 'Export
' to download your room data.
Repeat as necessary for each room you wish to export your data from. If you choose to logout when finished, you may ignore the dialog stating that 'You'll lose access to your encrypted messages
' and click 'I don't want my encrypted messages
'. Your encryption keys are backed-up to the server and also reside on your mobile device you use the Circles app from.
The website where the project now resides can be visited at https://circles-project.github.io/, and you can follow us for project updates in our Matrix room '#circles:matrix.org
'. Source code for the project is available on https://github.com/circles-project.
Thank you for using the application and for providing your feedback. Thanks also to FUTO for their generous support over the past years and for allowing us to keep the app alive going forward.
